Messaging basics, according to Open Core Ventures

Here’s what Open Core Ventures has to say about messaging, in their handbook for open source startups:

Messaging Overview

But there are a few universally true things:

  1. People need to know you exist.

  2. It should be easy for you to explain the product/service you provide.

  3. The benefit/value of your product can be summarized in a few sentences.

I totally agree. I would summarize it slightly differently, though. People need to know you exist, they need to understand what you do and they need to understand why your project/product is important. You should be able to convey all of that information in a couple sentences, max. It should also be immediately obvious how you are different from your competitors.

Also, read the entire OCV handbook, if you haven’t already. It’s good.
