Getting serious about open source

Whether or not positioning matters for an open source project comes down to one simple question:

How serious are you about building an expanding, sustainable community?

If you’re not serious about it and the open source project is just something you do for fun, with no intention of monetization of any kind — yeah, positioning doesn’t really matter. There are some projects like this, and that’s totally fine.

But if you care about getting more GitHub stars, if you care about having some contributors other than you, if you care about building something that could potentially live on even after you’ve moved on — then positioning is really important. If you’d like to find a way for the open source project to support you financially, positioning matters.
